What MOQ actually means

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is the minimum number of units the factory will produce in a single production run of a single product specification.

In hijab manufacturing, "product specification" typically means: one style + one fabric + one colour. Each unique combination has its own MOQ.

Why factories set MOQs

MOQs are not arbitrary — they exist because garment manufacturing involves fixed setup costs that do not scale with quantity:

Colour dyeing setup: Preparing a dye bath, conducting lab dip tests, and calibrating the dyeing equipment to hit a specific colour target costs the same whether you produce 50 or 500 pieces. At 50 pcs, the setup cost per unit is significant. Below 50 pcs, it often does not make economic sense for the factory.

Print setup (for printed hijabs): Digital print setups require colour profiling, test prints, and calibration. Screen printing requires physical screen preparation for each colour in the design. These setup costs are independent of quantity.

Production scheduling: Small production runs disrupt production flow and reduce overall factory efficiency. MOQs help factories plan production batches that use machinery and labour efficiently.

How to plan your first order around MOQ constraints

Step 1: Choose your styles first Your style choice defines how many MOQ units you are committing to per colour. If you choose 3 styles and your MOQ is 50 pcs, you need 150 pcs per colour you order across all 3 styles.

Step 2: Be ruthless about colour count in the first order First-time buyers consistently over-order colour breadth. Your first order should have 3–5 colours maximum per style. You will not know which colours your market prefers until you have sell-through data.

Step 3: Match your MOQ commitment to your cash flow Be honest about how much capital you can commit. At a $6.00 unit price and 50-pc MOQ: - 1 style × 4 colours = 200 pcs = $1,200 - 2 styles × 4 colours = 400 pcs = $2,400 - 3 styles × 6 colours = 900 pcs = $5,400

Occasionally — but there are trade-offs.

Below-MOQ surcharges: Some factories will produce below MOQ at a unit price premium (10–30% higher) to compensate for the setup cost inefficiency. This is a reasonable approach for a first sample-run-sized production batch.

Consolidation orders: Some factories will accept below-MOQ quantities if you can consolidate with other buyers running the same style and colour. This is operationally complex and not something most small factories offer reliably.

The honest answer: Factories set MOQs based on their economics, and pushing below MOQ consistently damages the working relationship. If 50 pcs per colour is genuinely too large for your current budget, the better solution is to order fewer colours rather than fewer pieces per colour.
